Services & Clinics

The Royal Adelaide Hospital (RAH) is designed to ensure people with disabilities can easily navigate and access facilities around the hospital.

Getting around the hospital

The hospital design incorporates a combination of sensory aids and visual tools to assist people with disabilities in navigating their way into, and around, the building.

These include:

  • lifts with braille buttons and audible level announcements. These are situated inside the main entrance areas on Levels 1, 2 and 3, and throughout all wings of the hospital
  • hearing loops and microphones installed in all reception areas where patients go to check in. A hearing loop is a sound system which produces a wireless signal that is picked up by hearing aids and overcomes distance and background noise. This allows hearing aid wearers to hear the speaker’s voice with less distortion. Signage will indicate that a hearing loop is available.
  • contrasting colours to distinguish abutting pavements and walkway intersections
  • tactile ground surface indicators, which can be felt underfoot, to guide people to the hospital’s main reception on Level 3.

Hospital staff and volunteers are also available to provide directions.

Access Hub: Helping you connect

Access Hub provides information and services to help people who are d/Deaf, hard of hearing or have a speech communication difficulty, to make a phone call or connect online.

You can access and learn about services here, as well as other ways to connect.

Room accessibility

In-room accessibility features include:

  • lifting tracks to mechanically lift and turn patients when necessary
  • large room size from 18 to 21 square metres
  • handrails running from the bedside through to the ensuite
  • easy-to-reach equipment stores
  • trolley showers on each floor to assist with bathing.

Car parking, drop-off and pick-up zones

There are 50 disabled car parking spaces available at the hospital:

  • drop-off and pick-up: allocated spaces are on Levels 1 and 2 near Section lift lobbies
  • short-term parking: allocated spaces near the Emergency Department are in the Level 2 'pay and display' zone. Short-term disabled parking is free for up to two hours and available to all South Australian and interstate-issued Disability Parking Permit holders.
  • long-term parking: allocated spaces are on Levels 1 and 2.

Please display your Disability Parking Permit at all times.
