Paying your bill

The RAH is part of Australia's public health care system and offers hospital care to any Australian resident under Medicare arrangements. You can choose to be admitted as either a public or private patient within a public hospital.

Public patients do not need pay for hospital services.

Private patients can have their care funded by their private healthcare fund or self-fund their care.

Patients without a Medicare card (or Medicare Ineligible Patients) need to pay for hospital services.

It is your responsibility to ensure that you have adequate and appropriate health insurance cover or adequate money to cover the cost of your health care if you are not eligible for free healthcare within Australia.

Patients from countries with reciprocal healthcare arrangements are treated like public patients and do not need to pay for hospital services. Patients who are residents of countries with no reciprocal healthcare agreement with Australia are liable to pay for their hospital care.

Motor vehicle accidents, ReturnToWorkSA and Veterans’ Affairs patients do not need to pay for hospital services. Costs are covered by third party providers.
