Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

We provide surgical procedures of the mouth and jaws for adult patients.

What we do

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is a specialist unit of SA Dental, Royal Adelaide Hospital and the University of Adelaide. 

We provide a wide range of dental, medical and surgical treatment, as well as outpatient and inpatient services. 

Minor procedures with local anaesthetic are undertaken at the SA Dental Hospital, with major operations with general anaesthetic occurring at the RAH. 

These include: 

  • tooth extractions, including wisdom teeth
  • exposures of submerged teeth
  • removal of cysts and bony growths
  • dentoalveolar surgery for medically compromised patients
  • biopsies of suspected pathology
  • orthognathic surgery for the upper or lower jaw to assist in jaw realignment, proper function and forsleep apnoea (and other sleep problems)
  • cryofreeze (freezing of tissue) for neuralgia and nerve repairs
  • bone grafts, plates and implants to restore loss of bone structure
  • temporomandibular joint operations
  • surgically Assisted Rapid Maxillary Expansion operations to expand the upper jaw
  • genioplasty, (chin reduction), rhinoplasty (nose reduction) and maxillary sinus septoplasty
  • tumour resection and neck dissection for head and neck cancer patients
  • conservative dental treatment for special needs patients.

Once your referral has been received it will be triaged according to clinical urgency.

If your referral is accepted, you will either:

  • receive a letter, phone call or text message confirming your appointment time, date and location
  • receive a letter confirming you have been waitlisted for an appointment.

If the referral is declined, your GP or referring medical practitioner will be notified.

The service triages referrals according to clinical urgency.

Urgent and serious referrals

If you are concerned about the appointment being delayed or if the patient's condition is deteriorating, contact the registrar to discuss. 

Registrars are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Patients requiring immediate assessment should be sent directly to the Emergency Department.
