Respiratory and Sleep

We care for patients who have breathing or sleeping problems.

What we do

Respiratory and Sleep manage a range of general and complex disorders including cystic fibrosis, lung disease and tuberculosis. 

We are a multi-disciplinary inpatient, ambulatory and outreach respiratory and sleep service. 

All statewide services are based at the RAH, with all patients treated out of this location.

Programs at the RAH and The Queen Elizabeth Hospital (TQEH):  

  • asthma
  • COPD
  • complex lung disease related to other organ transplantation
  • lung cancer and other malignancies
  • pleural disorders
  • Interstitial lung disorders
  • occupational lung disorders
  • pulmonary vascular disease/pulmonary hypertension
  • rare lung disorders
  • respiratory failure, upper airway and other sleep disorders.

Once your referral has been received it will be triaged according to clinical urgency.

If your referral is accepted, you will either:

  • receive a letter, phone call or text message confirming your appointment time, date and location
  • receive a letter confirming you have been waitlisted for an appointment.

If the referral is declined, your GP or referring medical practitioner will be notified.

Outpatient services

The service triages referrals according to clinical urgency.

Urgent and serious referrals

If you are concerned about the appointment being delayed or if the patient's condition is deteriorating, contact the registrar to discuss. 

Registrars are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Patients requiring immediate assessment should be sent directly to the Emergency Department.

Cystic Fibrosis (Adult)

The Cystic Fibrosis (Adult) Service within Respiratory and Sleep has a dedicated registrar on call. 

Use the Clinical Prioritisation Criteria (CPC) as a referral guide. 

For clinical advice phone the service, Monday to Friday 8:00 am to 4:30 pm.

Thoracic Medicine

Thoracic Medicine unit treats the following respiratory and sleep conditions: 

  • asthma - adult
  • cough (chronic)
  • COPD
  • dyspnoea
  • haemoptysis
  • home oxygen
  • interstitial lung disease
  • lung neoplasia
  • pleural disorders
  • respiratory infection
  • sleep disordered breathing / chronic hypoventilation syndromes
  • sleep disorders (non-respiratory)

Lung Transplant Unit

The Lung Transplant Unit is a statewide service, based at the RAH.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation

Pulmonary Rehabilitation is treated at the Hampstead Campus of Royal Adelaide Hospital.

Tuberculosis SA (TB SA)

TB SA is a statewide service, assisting with diagnosis, treatment and vaccinations for tuberculosis patients in SA and NT.
