Services & Clinics

What we do

The Trauma and General Surgery and Surgical Oncology Unit provides specialised assessment and care for people with the following conditions:

  • hernias – umbilical, inguinal & incisional, laparoscopic and open
  • melanoma
  • sarcoma and soft tissue tumours
  • post-trauma
  • general surgery
  • gall bladder surgery for biliary colic and cholecystitis.

We do not offer paediatric services or services to patients receiving care for the same condition at another LHN.

Clinics are held at the RAH weekly. Appointments are by referral only and we offer public and private (Medicare bulk billed) services.

Rapid access clinics run in conjunction with the above services.

Where to find us

Outpatient appointments are held on Level 3 (ground floor) of the RAH.

We will be in contact with you within clinically recommended times, depending on the length of the waiting list, to arrange an outpatient appointment.

If there is no waiting list, you will receive an appointment booking letter or we will contact you to arrange a suitable time.

Clinics are held at the RAH weekly. Rapid access clinics run in conjunction with all our surgical services.

Do you need an interpreter or cultural support?

An interpreter ensures that your diagnosis and treatment are explained in your preferred language so that you can ask questions and understand the information.

If you require an interpreter or cultural support at your appointment or during your hospital stay, phone us before your appointment.

Outpatient services

Find out information about specialist outpatient appointments, how to be referred, plus information when attending an outpatient clinic.

Referring a patient

To refer your patient, please send the referral to us via fax. To ensure timely triage, include all demographic and clinical details.

All referrals are triaged by the service according to clinical urgency.

Patients requiring immediate assessment should be sent directly to the Emergency Department.

To refer your patient, follow the outpatient service information, triage and referral guidelines, and complete and fax a referral to us.

If you are concerned about any delay of the appointment or if there is any deterioration in your patient’s condition, contact the Registrar to discuss.

Discharge guidelines

Patients whose medical condition has stabilised or resolved and for whom no further appointment has been made will be formally discharged. If a medical assessment is required again, a new referral, explaining the reason should be faxed to us.

As only the GP referral is available to the specialist at the time of triage, simply requesting review without providing information about the problem is insufficient and will lead to significant delays in assessing the referral, which will most likely be returned for more information.
